My name is Alan Vandenburg, I have been privileged to recently have been asked to join the Board of SDSB as the Treasurer. I have been a long-time member, but this is the first I have served on the Board. In fact, there have been quite a few changes in my life this year! I recently retired from SBVI in June. it was a move I had not planned but I have not regretted that decision!!
Retirement certainly looks different now than we had planned. My wife Patti & I have been married 28 years. We sold our home 6 years ago and moved into a loft in downtown Sioux Falls, another move we have never regretted, but life here does look a little different with the pandemic. We used to dine out several times a week but are now learning to cook for ourselves! Another pandemic related change is that we were able to divest ourselves of our Hawaiian time share! This will be a big change for us as that was always our go to vacation spot. Time for new adventures!! My family, four sisters and a brother all live in different states, so we have some vacation destinations!
Now to back up a little bit, I did grow up in the Southwest part of North Dakota (Flasher area). My Dad was a part-time farmer, and I cherish those memories. I graduated from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, so I appreciate how cold winters can be. It did leave me with a love of hockey, so Patti and I have been long time season ticketholders with the Sioux Falls Stampede. (another casualty of COVID). We also follow the NLF Vikings (Alan) and Pittsburgh Steelers (Patti).
As mentioned above, I recently retired from Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired, where I worked as a counselor for over twenty-two years. I still serve as a Counselor Representative to the Board of SBVI. It has been so good to be able to maintain connections through this role and serving on the SBVI Board! I look forward to touching base with you all!
